To start with, we must look for reputation. A hosting service with a good reputation is better than one which hasn’t been reviewed. ProphpBB has a god reputation, despite being only a few months old. Many posts have been written about it including Tatumzlyfe and it’s reputation has grown significant from the newbie hosting service to one of the leading providers of phpBB3. So, now only features.

Every good host should provide the following ; Unlimited bandwidth, unlimited members, unlimited posts and at least 99.8% uptime guaranteed. If your host does not match this, simply leave. Though not all hosts will let you leave, hence they charge you for a forum backup, including a certain host who charge $15 for a backup, as well as having at least 6 adverts on your forum. What a con. The only forum host to give free backups to my knowledge is ProphpBB which offers them on request. But, so as to prevent abuse, it is limited to one per week.

Another good thing to look out for is the chance to use your own domain name. This is an uncommon feature which is essential if you want your forum looking professional. So, rather than your members needing to visit http://yourforum.forumhost.com, they can visit a professional looking domain like http://yourforum.com which is alot more appealing and also easier to remember, hence you get returning visitors.

A good host should always offer support via a forum as otherwise, they are being hypoctical by claiming you need a forum, yet not usin it in one of it’s most conventional uses. And, with the forum, there should always be at least one support team member visit every day, regardless of holidays or other occasions. At least one moderator or administrator should have visited as otherwise, how else will users recieve support? And also, there should be at least one support team member per 500 forums on the hosting platform, so as to be able to keep track of problems and answer queries. One forum host, called Freeforums.org claims to host 150,000 forums yet only has around 7 support team staff, which i work out to be at a ratio of 21428 forums per staff member. So, imagine if only 1% of them users wanted support, that is over 200 users per support member and that is only 1%! ProphpBB on the otherhand has an administrator and 3 support team members for only a few hundered forums and all queries are ironed out quickly and effectively, with many taknig as little as a few minutes as both support members and forum regulars help out. So, which one would you rather request help on?

One of the most decisive aspects to a host is features, so how many modifications and styles a host has. Many hosts have over 20 mods, hundereds of styles and also loads of adverts. Freeforums.org, our favourite host (to laugh at anyway) has plenty of mods, stylse and adverts. The adverts are evrywhere. Top and bottom of the forums, on the registration screen and also on otherpages. And, they have a donation mod for which they claim their own tax! ProphpBB offers only a few mods at the moment but plenty of styles with more added weekly and best of all NO ADS. Nope, none at all.
